Raku is an ancient Japanese technique. Glazed ceramics are taken from the kiln when they are red hot and then placed in a container with a combustable material (such as sawdust and/or newspaper). The container is then closed to reduce oxygen, creating a reduction atmosphere. This process affects the colours in the glazes producing a unique colour design.
